Renewable Energy

Madison County has ranked Renewable Energy as a priority in our Economic Development efforts throughout the County.

Hydropower- We have a rich history in the use of hydropower. Many of the earliest industries in the modern era stemmed from the use of water as a catalyst for industrial development.

Please see the below Hydro Resource Guide study performed by Kevin Jablonski and Philip Hofmeyer in the documents section for more information.

Wind Energy- Madison County was home to the first commercial scale wind farm in NYS. Madison County boasts three wind farms: One in Madison, Fenner, and one in a three township area of Eaton, Stockbridge and Madison. The Fenner Windmill visitor center (FREE Center Inc.) is open daily in Fenner on Burlingame Rd.

The Fenner Renewable Energy Center, Inc. (or "FREE Center") is a grass-roots organization formed to educate the public on the benefits of renewable energy and other sustainable practices. We are located on-site at the Fenner Wind Farm in the heart of Central New York. Since late 2001, we have lived and/or worked amongst the 20 turbines that make up this 30 MW wind project. We organized to share our unique experience and to encourage others to embrace a clean energy future
